Retro Food

There’s a lot of “retro food” we just don’t eat anymore.
Anyone remember these?

Ahhhhh, yes. The much-maligned fruitcake—a cake with candied fruits and nuts that’s usually been soaked in something.

Ewww.

Fruitcake has ancient roots, but fell into deep disfavor in the U.S. around the 1980s and eventually became a sort of joke. Seems as though the

fruitcake has faded into relative obscurity in the U.S., though it’s still common in some other countries.

And what about this one?

Chicken-ala-King! The history of this recipe and its name are a little murky, but this milky chicken dish with green bell peppers, pimento, and mushrooms was pretty popular in American kitchens for much of the 20th century. Its popularity started to wane in the 1980s, although some still consider it a comfort food (or just a good way to use up leftover chicken).

And what about Fondue?

Remember the shared, heated cheese dip served in a special warming pot? Ha! This was the rage at parties in the 1970s. While you can sometimes find fondue in restaurants, it’s a pretty niche item now—and since single-function items like fondue pots take up valuable cabinet space in your home, it’s an extremely rare sight at parties.

I’m really glad we’ve left the “retro dishes” behind.
I prefer some good ol’ Mexican food or a great burger any day.

Thinking about these retro foods, also has me thinking about the great wedding feast we’ll enjoy with Christ in heaven. I don’t know what He’ll serve, but it’s going to taste a LOT better than anything we can imagine. (But I kinda hope there’s some Coca-Cola and a Krispy Kreme somewhere on the table.)

You sure are loved!
