Interview with Sisterhood Magazine, July 2014

Q: What are a few of your favorite past times when you’re not traveling or working on Sisterhood Magazine?
A: I love playing with Obie and Amos—my two mini-Schnauzers, shopping, going to movies, reading and hanging with good friends.

Q: What’s the coolest place you’ve spoken at in your career?
A: Irian Jaya. It’s a tiny country next to Papua New Guinea. It’s about as far as you can go . . . without being on your way back! Very remote. Extremely primitive. A few of the teen missionary girls took me in a tiny four-seater plane to a village called Kiri Kiri. After we landed, we got in a hollowed-out tree trunk canoe and went about 45 minutes upriver to this little village whose people had no concept of God, music, mirrors or anything modern. It was like stepping back into the stone age.

Q: How many cans of Coke do you think you’ve consumed in your life?
A: I love a cold glass of Coca-Cola! I’m guessing I’ve probably consumed at least a couple of thousand Cokes this far in my life. BUT . . . I’m currently on a Coca-Cola fast! In fact as of July 1, 2014 I’ve gone without any Coca-Cola for 237 days. I miss it, but I have plenty of Coca-Cola surroundings to keep me happy. Ha! In fact, I have an entire Coca-Cola Café in my upstairs loft complete with a 1970s Coca-Cola machine that works, Coca-Cola booth, four Coca-Cola tables with Coca-Cola chairs, Coca-Cola ceiling fan, neon Coca-Cola lights on the walls and a lighted Coca-Cola counter made out of empty Coca-Cola bottles complete with a 1915 Coca-Cola cash register! I also have Coca-Cola sheets, towels, trashcans, plates, bowls, glasses, cups, mugs and silverware.

Q: What’s your favorite color?
A: I love all the primary colors. I’m definitely a bright-color woman. Orange is my favorite!

Q: What’s your favorite way to spend time with God?
A: I love reading the Bible. I read it each morning before I even leave the house. Spending time with God through His Word is a much-loved necessity for me. I also love great Christian praise and worship music, and I love many of the old hymns.

Q: What’s your favorite Bible verse?
A: Habakkuk 2:3 from the Living Bible: “But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!”

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: I’m crazy about Mexican food, but I also love burnt hotdogs, Honeycomb cereal and chocolate malts.

Q: What’s your favorite book?
A: A skinny, narrow-shaped little book titled The Singer by Calvin Miller, published in 1975.

Q: What’s your favorite sports team?
A: I’m an OKC Thunder basketball team fanatic! I’ve felt humbled and privileged to have prayed at three of their home games—one an NBA playoff game against the Houston Rockets.

Q: What’s your favorite moment with Obie and Amos?
A: Obie’s real name is Obadiah. Obadiah and Amos are prophets from the Old Testament. So I call them “my little prophets.” Ha! And each time I come home from a trip, they they’re so excited, they bark and jump and play-growl. And I tell them they’re “prophesying.” It’s fun to come home to two little dogs who are so happy. The three of us just hug and love being reunited.

Q: What’s your favorite article you’ve written for Sisterhood so far?
A: For the first two or three issues—back in 2009—I wrote a series on how to make friends. It was simple yet practical. I meet a lot of teens who are just lonely. They yearn for solid and genuine friendships. So this was a fun article containing the necessary ingredients in making good friends—learning how to be a great conversationalist, using your smile, how to encourage others, etc.

Q: What’s your favorite interview with someone for a Sisterhood article so far?
A: I enjoyed interviewing Brit Nichole. She’s such a fun lady with an amazing passion for teen girls. She came on one of our “Never the Same” mission trips and seeing her just hang out with our readers and get to know them was really refreshing.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about working with teens?
A: I love their openness, their desire to become all that God wants them to be and the fact that they’re willing to put their faith into action by going on a missions trip or doing anything outside of their comfort zone.

Q: What’s your favorite Sisterhood cover?
A: In July 2011, we featured a solid black cover with just a bit of red and white on it. I feel this has been our strongest cover so far—and it’s because of the cover story we did on persecuted Christians. This is a topic I’m passionate about and pray about. When you realize the torture, persecution and even death that’s happening to so many Christians around the world while we sit comfortably in air-conditioned churches, it’s truly overwhelming. I love our readers! We have girls with tender hearts who—when made aware of the plight many Christians are enduring—are ready to pray for them.
