Zzzzzzzzz
This is an Alpine Swift. It can stay in the air for months without landing or sleeping.
Yes.
Months.
The tallest animal on earth only sleeps about 30 minutes a day.
Elephants sleep about two hours a day—usually somewhere between 2 a.m. and 6 p.m. But they can stay awake for 46 hours (if in a predatory situation).
Koalas, on the other hand, often sleep 22 hours a day. (During my high school teaching days, I had some students with this ability.)
And dolphins can sleep with half of their brain, while the other half remains alert. (I may have met some church folks with this gift.)
“Be on guard, stay awake.” (Mark 13:33)
And check this out:
“Be alert and of sober mind.” (1 Peter 5:8)
But WHY?
Peter gives us the reason in the rest of the above verse:
“Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”
That’s a great reason to stay awake!
Of course, God knows our bodies need to be refueled. That’s one reason
He told us to keep the Sabbath as a rest day.
“I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make
me dwell in safety.” (Psalm 4:8)
Bottom line: Like everything else, we need balance.
Thank God for precious times of rest and refueling. And during your waking
hours, be alert to His guidance in your life. This comes through the Holy
Spirit dwelling within us.
He guides us.
Corrects us.
Moves us forward.
Empowers us.
You are loved!
