What’s in a Name?

Czechia

The Czech Republic renamed itself Czechia in 2016. Before that, it was known as Czechoslovakia. And even before that, it had another name: Bohemia.

Landlocked in central Europe, Czechia is most famous for its capital, Prague, the “City of a Hundred Spires.”

eSwatini

In April 2018, King Mswati III declared that he would be changing the name of Swaziland to to the Kingdom of eSwatini. The announcement came during celebrations for the country’s 50th anniversary of independence (and the king’s 50th birthday). One of his main reasons for the change was to lessen confusion with the name of Switzerland. (Though I find it hard to believe anyone would mistake the country known for the Alps with a hot-dusty country the size of New Jersey that’s known for its black and white rhinos.)

And Even More

There are at least five other countries that have changed their names in the past decade. It can be confusing, can’t it? I often mistakenly refer to Myanmar as Burma.

Things, places, and even people are sometimes re-named and re-branded for a new image.

The Bible tells us that someday Jesus will give US a new name!

“I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on
it, known only to the one who receives it.” (Revelation 2:17 NIV)

I like to think that because God has created us in His perfect image, He’ll give us a new name to reflect that new image. In other words, we get miraculously re-branded.

We get a new image.

We get an eternal name from Jesus Himself.

Wow!

Glory to God who makes ALL things new—not just cities or countries . . .
but even people.

You are loved!
