Dance Fever

The phrase “dance the night away” became more literal in 1518, when about 400 people were affected by a “dancing plague” in the city of Strasbourg, France.

The epidemic began in July when a single woman known as Frau Troffea, spontaneously began boogying away in the middle of the street.

She danced alone and continuously for an entire week before several dozen others felt the urge to dance, too. By the end of the month, the number had increased to several hundred.

The mysterious dancing eventually subsided, and the city of Strasbourg returned to normal in September.

The big question is, of course, WHY?

Physicians have proposed a theory suggesting that a fungus called ergot, which is occasionally found on bread, might be responsible.
This fungus can cause convulsions if ingested and may have contributed to the uncontrollable dancing, as well as other instances of mass panic.

I don’t know how to dance, but I’ve always loved hip-hop dance. I’m guessing if I tried it, I’d break a bone or scare any on-lookers for a lifetime!

• In 2 Samuel 6:14-16, we see King David dancing in praise to God.
• And in Exodus 15:20-21 we see Miriam and several women dancing to glorify God.

Get this: The Old Testament Book of Zephaniah says that one day, when we’re pure and healthy and full of life (as God created us to be), God will express His delight in us by singing!

Can you imagine what that performance will be like!
One Bible version translates Zephaniah 3:17 this way:

“He will dance with shouts of joy for you.” (Jerusalem Bible)

When we dance with God in heaven, it won’t be because of a weird plague; it will be because we desire to glorify our King of kings in every imaginable way possible with all we have and with all we are!

You are loved!
