Several historical conflicts are remembered for being sparked by humorous
items. Some of these include:
• The Pig War:
The Pig War started in 1859 when an American settler shot a pig that was trespassing on the wrong side of the road—which happened to be his property in the San Juan Islands.
• The War of the Bucket:
This medieval conflict (1325-1337) began over a dispute over a stolen water bucket.
• The Pastry War:
This conflict in 1838 involved France intervening in Mexico after a Mexican military officer damaged a pastry chef’s property.
• The Football War:
The 1969 conflict between El Salvador and Honduras erupted after a football match and was fueled by pre-existing tensions and racist stereotypes.
• The War of the Golden Stool:
This conflict in 1900 between the Ashanti people of Ghana and the British
Empire was a direct result of the British demand for the Golden Stool—a sacred symbol of Ashanti unity and sovereignty.
• The War of Jenkin’s Ear:
The war’s name originates from an incident where a British captain, Robert
Jenkins, claimed his ear was cut off by Spanish coast guards. This incident, though exaggerated, served as a pretext for the war, which was largely rooted in trade disputes and colonial ambitions.
We laugh at these silly wars, but doesn’t it make you yearn for a time when war will no longer exist?
“Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for
war anymore.” (Micah 4:3 NIV)
And here’s more good news:
“He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth.” (Psalm 46:9 NIV)
Thank You, Jesus, for the peace, victory, and glory of eternity that awaits believers!
You are loved.
