Where Are They?
If you were asked to guess how many shipwrecks are in the oceans, what would be your guess?
1,000?
5,400?
650,000?
How about 3 million!
That’s right: There are an estimated 3 million shipwrecks in the ocean.
The average person can probably name a few of the more famous ships, such as the Titanic or Queen Anne’s Revenge, but countless others have vanished from view and public awareness.
People have been building boats for at least 10,000 years.
But it may be surprising to learn that less than one percent of these submerged crafts have been explored. Why such a small percentage?
Well, the world’s oceans are enormous—the average depth is 12,000 feet!
And only 19 percent of the ocean floor has been charted in detail.
There’s also the matter of money needed to launch expeditions to find
these vessels.
So what happens to these sunken ships?
Some are looted for profit.
Some are turned into underwater museums.
Many become reefs—playgrounds for fish.
While we continue to wonder about what happens to sunken vessels, we don’t have to guess about what happens to our sins.
“He has removed our sins as far away from us as the east is from the
west.” (Psalm 103:12 LB)
Once we have confessed our sins and repented, God removes them far and wide and even deeper than the deepest ocean. In other words, He chooses to forget and no longer holds us accountable.
Years ago, I heard a preacher say, “He casts our sins into the deepest ocean and posts a sign that says NO FISHING HERE.”
We can still explore for sunken ships.
But when it comes to our forgiven sins, it’s off-limits.
We don’t search for them. Find them. Or continue to think about them.
We.
Are.
Free.
You are loved!
