Zacharias
(Reminder: I’m doing an A to Z devotional blog.)
Zacharias and his wife, Elizabeth, were childless but had prayed desperately for a son. We find their story in Luke 1:12-17. They were good people—in fact, Zacharias was a priest. Here’s how they’re described in Scripture:
“They were both righteous before God, walking in all the
commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.” (Luke 1:6 MEV)
Now that they’re both advanced in years, it seems their dream will never be fulfilled. But guess what—God doesn’t put a timeline on dreams He places within our hearts! While Zacharias was in the temple praying, an angel appeared to him. His response?
“Zacharias was paralyzed in fear.” (Luke 1:12 Message)
We’d probably react the same way if a supernatural being appeared to us. The angel was quick to comfort him, though, and told him not to be afraid.
“Zacharias, do not be afraid. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a son. You are to name him John.”
(Luke 1:13 NLV)
And the couple who assumed God was finished with them learned that God is in the business of making the dreams He places in the hearts of His children come true.
This couple are the parents of John the Baptist—the forerunner of Jesus our Savior.
And if you’re curious about the meaning of Zacharias’ name?
Here’s the definition:
The Lord has remembered.
