So what did people use to wipe out pencil marks before erasers were invented?

Well, they didn’t have to look far! They used a common item found in most kitchens.

Back in the day, artists, scientists, government officials, and anyone else prone to making mistakes would wad up a small piece of bread and moisten it ever so slightly. The resulting ball of dough erased pencil marks on paper almost as well as the pink creations found on the end of No. 2 pencils today.

Seems like a lot of trouble to have to moisten a slice of bread and use it to erase what we’ve done wrong. And it doesn’t seem very stable, does it? The bread crumbles, a mess is made, and now the paper you’ve written on is wet.

Today, using the little pink eraser still sometimes leaves a faint reminder of what we’ve written.

I’m so grateful for the stable, permanent, never-failing erasing method God uses!

When He erases our sins,
